© Haags Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, Netherlands/ The Bridgeman Art Library Theo Van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian are the founders of the De Stijl movement. During the 1920's Van Doesburg broke away from the De Stijl movement and drifted towards Dada. Van Doesburg was deeply influenced by Paul Cezanne and the cubists. This painting was inspired by Cezanne's earlier work The Card Players. Van Doesburg subsequently painted another work, also entitled Card Players, the latter being a lot more geometrically based.
