| The Card Sharps - c. 1790 Rev. Matthew William PETERS (1742 - 1814) Oil on canvas (46.8 x 56.3 cm)

This work was obviously influenced by Caravaggio's Cardsharps (and his followers). Works portraying cardsharps are susceptible of moralizing interpretations, warning the viewer of the dangers of gambling, or youth, or easy money, but here it is probably meant to be appreciated simply as a humorous subject. |
