Jan Steen: Inn with Violinist and Card Players

Collection of Queen Elizabeth II

Jan Steen made a series of works with card players. See The Card Players, Card Players Quarreling, and Gamblers Quarreling. A cheating theme could not be depicted from this work, however upon examination of his other paintings one will discover that the artist borrowed elements from his own earlier works. Also notice how the household is in disarray. As the Dutch would say, "A typical Jan Steen household" (see The Card Players for description), nothing is quite where it should be -- the tablecloth is hanging, the place seems to be loud and flooded with commotion...etc.
