The Cardsharps (Die Falschspieler)
Gerard van HONTHORST (1590-1656)

This lesser known painting featuring cards cheaters at work is obviously influenced by Caravaggio's The Cardsharps. However, it also seems to borrow heavily from La Tour's The Cheat with the Ace of Diamonds as well as La Tour's candlelight treatment of nocturnal scenes. The other element that seems to have been borrowed from La Tour's Cheat is the presence of the woman. The character whose face is wrapped up seems to be borrowed from Valentin's Cardsharpers, however.

With all this borrowing it is not surprising this painting doesn't rank as high as its preceding masterpieces.
